UM Rugby Club 12 Ft. Lauderdale Men 7

The University of Miami Rugby Club played against Ft. Lauderdale men's in an exhitbition match. The hurricanes had 7 returning starters and 8 rookies take the field against Ft. Lauderdale. Solid rucking, impressive back line play, and good tackling characterized the play of the rugby 'canes. The hurricanes took an early lead and went on to win 12-7. They will be playing in their first Florida Cup match this coming Saturday in Tampa versus Florida State.

UM Rugby Club 12 Florida State 19

The University of Miami Rugby Club traveled to Tampa to play in their first Florida Cup Match against the Florida State Rugby Club. The first half started off slow with both teams making many mistakes. Florida State took the advantage 7-0 at half. In the second half, Florida State quickly scored 2 more tries to make the score 19-0. Miami led a late rally but could not close the gap. 8 Man, Dan Roesch was voted man of the match. Miami looks forward to hosting Eckerd College at home this Saturday.

UM Rugby Club 39 Eckerd College 0

After a dissapointing loss to Florida State, the Hurricanes Rugby Club came back with a statement. Brilliant back line play as well as hard hitting action from the forwards helped Miami shut out Eckerd College. Dave Hogan rallied the offense with four tries while three other 'canes contributed a try. Inside center, Scott Izat, was voted man of the match. Now 1-1 in the conference, Miami will be taking on FIU this Saturday

   

Feb 11, 2006 Key Biscayne, FL

UM Rugby Club 43 Florida International University 17

After an impressive win against Eckerd College, the University of Miami Rugby Club met up against cross town rivals, FIU, in a beach match on Key Biscayne. FIU scored early, but the Canes' solid phase play and movement of the ball led to seven tries against the Golden Panthers. Flyhalf, Andrew Bean, scored four tries and was voted man of the match. The Hurricanes improved to 2-1 in the conference and will be traveling to Orlando to play against USF.

UM Rugby Club 14 University of South Florida 21

The University of Miami traveled to Orlando, FL only to be beaten by the USF Bulls from Tampa, FL. While the Hurricanes showed moments of strong rucking, phase play, and movement in the backs during the game, the lack of consistency kept the club out of the try zone even after the team had advanced to the 5 meter line towards the end of the game. Inside Center, Scott Izat, scored 2 tries to help the UM Rugby Club close the scoring gap. The Hurricanes will have a week off to practice and prepare for south division rivals, FAU, in Boca Raton, on March 4th.

UM Rugby Club 10 Florida Atlantic University 39

The UM Rugby Club traveled to Boca Raton to play against FAU in a game that would decide who would be 1st place in Florida South DII. UM came out quickly and scored first, however the determined Owls led by strong play in forwards wore the Hurricanes down. UM looks to build on this game and prepare for the St. Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament in Savannah, GA.

   

Mar 17-19, 2006 Savannah, GA

St. Patrick's Day Rugby Tournament

The Rugby Club traveled to Savannah, GA, to represent the University of Miami in one of the largest rugby tournaments on the East Coast. The Hurricanes had a chance to compete against some of the best teams in the country, including Radford (DII National Champions, 2004) and UNC Charlotte. The Canes will now have an off-week to prepare to face the Florida North DII champs, University of North Florida.

   
April 1, 2006 Tampa, FL

UM Rugby Club 12 University of North Florida 17

UM Rugby traveled to Tampa, FL for the last division match of the season against the University of North Florida, the DII Florida North Champions. UM allowed UNF to put up 3 early tries in the first half due to their good movement in the backs and timely offloadling. In the second half, the Canes came out with new-found determination and scored 2 tries. The game came down to a final surge on the UNF 5 meter line, however a penalty ended the Canes' drive and chance for a comeback. The Rugby club will compete in one more friendly match, on April 15, against a combination side of FIU and Miami men's players.

New Officer Elections!

At the end of a successful rebuilding season, elections were held at the UM campus by members of the club to select new officers. These officers will be responsible for directing the club on and off the field for the 2006-2007 season. The following are the results:
